This year’s Furniture Fair in Milan seen from the perspective of a designer

Jean-Marie Massaud is one of the most important protagonists of the international Furniture Fair in Milan. And maybe this is exactly why he moves around what is probably the most important trade gathering for design and living with a critical look: in his eyes the “Salone del Mobile” and the “FuoriSalone” are a meeting point “that reflects the latest trends – of all the creativity around the world.” We asked him what impressions he gained in Milan this time:
“This year I perceived the fair as a show of gigantism. The mere size of it can hardly be taken in any more. But despite this, this trade show continues to grow, in other words, it will continue to increase in importance! Unfortunately there were very few really new and long-term visions. Many manufacturers and creative people pursue an increasingly pragmatic approach as far as their products are concerned which literally “stick to the market”. It is a retrenchment as regards style; a lot of it is cosmetic or commercial. Existing products are changed or re-dressed, very often to “conceal” their lack of substance. My personal highlights were the presentations by Sony and Lexus. In the bathroom the Axor Starck ShowerCollection was the climax.”
